Broome to Katherine – Gateways

Some of Australia’s most beautiful colours are here – rich Pindan soils and turquoise sea in a town that is really moving ahead. Book your accommodation in advance if you are coming between May and September. From the south The Warlu Way links the Pilbara and Western Australian coast. Broome has airline services and one-way vehicle hire depots. If you are starting or finishing your journey here allow a few days to enjoy one of Australia’s most fascinating and unique towns.

Halls Creek

Adventurers coming on the Tanami Track and Buntine Highway/Duncan Road join Highway 1 here. Halls Creek has good local services and a fascinating Gold Rush history. Stop at the Visitor Information Centre, open 7 days a week, to make sure you see the nearby attractions before heading off.

Another opportunity to fly in or out, and the terminus of some 4WD safaris. Like Broome, you can even enjoy Kununurra as a single flight stop destination by hiring a local car.

Timber Creek

Closest town to the junction of the Buchanan Highway, another droving route now carrying more people than cattle. The unsealed access roads require a little more preparation as they are less travelled, so issues such as fuel and water require planning ahead.

This popular tourism centre has all visitor facilities as well as a host of local attractions, so plan to stop for a few days. From the south The Explorer’s Way follows the route of John McDouall Stuart, the first explorer to cross the continent in 1862. Many travellers coming from this direction enjoy Central Australia, with its many spectacular attractions including Uluru and Kings Canyon. Others come through the Barkly Tablelands on the Overlanders Way.

Many travellers come to The Savannah way from Darwin, just 324 kilometres north of Katherine. The Northern Territory’s Top End is full of amazing natural and cultural experiences
